Wojcicki is four-piece indie rock band based in Southern Vermont, featuring the music of songwriter and performer Matt Sharff, along with his longtime musical collaborators, drummer Phil Beninson, bassist Re Shepphard, and multi-instrumentalist Bethanie Yeakle. The band name (pronounced ‘Voy-CHEAT-ski’) is Sharff’s maternal family name, and was selected, somewhat cheekily, for it’s challenging pronunciation and spelling.
Their sound draws from the influences of post-punk, prog, songs of protest, and Americana. Originally started as a recording project, Wojcicki has released three albums: 2016’s Afterbirther, 2022’s Failure to Illuminate and 2025’s Wetmarket Scratch.
The band has performed from Western Massachusett’s Pioneer Valley to The Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire. This year’s release of Wetmarket Scratch sees them broadening their reach to cities in the Northeast, from Burlington to Boston, Providence to NYC.
Sharff began performing as a teenager with bands in his native New York City, at storied venues like CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, the Mercury Lounge, and The Fort.
Since relocating to Southern Vermont, he’s played from NXNE in Toronto to SXSW in Austin, sharing stages with broadly diverse artists including Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Bill Kirchen, The Silos, Mark Mulcahy, Roky Erikson, NRBQ, The Misfits, and Senator Bernie Sanders. He’s recorded with Adam Yauch and T-Bone Wolk, and performed with Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Sage), Dan Zanes, Jon Carroll (Starlight Vocal Band), and many more.
2025’s Wetmarket Scratch, a six-song EP recorded at Guilford Sounds (Pixies, Noah Kahan, Natalie Merchant, Roger Clark Miller) by Dave Snyder, mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Services, and released on 10” Vinyl, is a high point in Wojcicki’s evolution, with subject matter that plumbs the political as manifested in the personal, the natural, and the unconscious. The music can be both muscular and delicate, with abstract and angular textures hovering over and around driving grooves.
