Last Wednesday, March 20th, Honey & Soul joined Big Heavy World as a musical guest on Rocket Shop. Honey & Soul consists of three women, Julia (piano), Hannah (guitar), and Cleo (cello). All three women also sing, creating complex three-part harmonies. The sound that Honey & Soul creates is smooth and jazzy, with a hint of folk.

All three women have significantly different musical backgrounds. Cleo has a background in classical music, Julia played in a hip hop group, and Hannah has been a consistent jazz musician with her other band, Warm Water. While the three women have diverse backgrounds, together they “click” beautifully. They say that they do not have to spend hours plunking out notes on a piano to figure out harmonies. Instead, their voices can drop into perfect harmonies organically. The first time that they discovered their natural ability to harmonize was when they were improving during a practice for their song titled “Heart From Her Sleeve.” In this moment, the group realized that they have something really special to contribute to the music scene.

One of the main reasons why the three women experiment with vocals so fearlessly is because they feel so comfortable around each other. Together, they help each other to heal and to “speak what needs to be spoken.”
